What We Asked AI

93 unbranded prompts. Zero leading questions.

Every prompt in this study mirrors how real business owners search for conferences using AI. No event names. No celebrity mentions. No brand-specific language. Just discovery queries like “best business conferences for entrepreneurs 2026” and “affordable conferences for serious entrepreneurs.” This matters because the rankings below represent what AI recommends unprompted — the organic answer, not the paid one.

Finding #1

Small Business Expo outranks every celebrity-led event in AI recommendations

Across 1,465 unbranded queries, a B2B trade show with strong SEO and directory presence appears in 20.2% of all AI responses — more than 4x Tony Robbins (4.8%) and 8x 10X Growth Conference (2.5%). AI doesn't reward celebrity. It rewards indexable content footprint.

Visibility % = percentage of AI responses in which the event was mentioned across 1,465 queries.

The Celebrity Gap

Personality-brand events with massive social followings — Tony Robbins (4.8% visibility), 10X Growth Conference (2.5%) — rank well below the top B2B events. Small Business Expo alone appears in 20.2% of all AI responses. AI engines recommend events based on indexed, structured content — not ticket sales, social followers, or arena sellouts.

Finding #2

SXSW is the only event that crosses over from marketing to business AI answers

When our companion study ranked marketing conferences, SXSW appeared in 26.6% of AI responses. In business queries, SXSW appears in 15.2% of responses — strong cross-category presence. No other event shows up in the top 5 of both categories.

Visibility % = percentage of AI responses mentioning each event. Both studies use the same metric, making the comparison apples-to-apples despite different query volumes (1,465 business vs 8,068 marketing).

Why SXSW Wins Twice

SXSW runs multiple parallel tracks — Film, Music, Interactive, EDU, and Conference — giving it a content footprint that spans culture, creativity, tech, and enterprise. AI engines index it across industries, which is why a single event shows up in two completely different query universes. No other business or marketing event has this breadth.

Finding #3

Corporate-hosted events appear organically in AI business answers

INBOUND (HubSpot), Dreamforce (Salesforce), Workhuman Live, Forbes Under 30 Summit, and EY Strategic Growth Forum all rank in the top 15 — proving that corporate-sponsored events compete alongside independent conferences when they build deep, indexable content libraries.

Owned-Brand Events Pay Off

For SaaS and B2B brands: running your own annual conference is an AI visibility asset, not just a marketing expense. Every year of speaker content, keynote coverage, session recaps, and attendee press extends the event's indexable footprint. It compounds.

Prompt-Level Evidence

Real questions. Real winners.

Sample prompts from the study and the event that came out on top across all four AI engines. Every row shows full 4-engine consensus: OpenAI, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overview independently converged on the same answer.

What This Tells Sponsors

Small Business Expo wins the broad discovery queries — the SMB owner asking AI for recommendations. SXSW wins when the prompt gets comparative or strategic. TechCrunch Disrupt owns the founder-with-a-budget niche. Different prompts route to different events. Know which prompts your buyers ask.

Visibility Score

How visible is the average business conference across AI engines?

Visibility score measures how prominently the Vault Conference — the audited brand in this study — appears in unbranded AI responses on a 0–100 scale. This provides context for what “typical” unbranded conference visibility looks like across engines.

What This Means

The overall average visibility score across all engines is 3.0 out of 100. Gemini is the standout — with an 11.9% mention rate and 9.1 avg visibility, it surfaces conference recommendations far more actively than the other three engines. OpenAI, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview all hover near 1% mention rate, meaning the vast majority of unbranded business queries on those platforms don't surface any specific conference brand at all.

Hypothesis Scorecard

What we expected vs what we found

We went into this study with four hypotheses about how AI engines would treat business conference recommendations. Here's how each one held up against 1,465 AI queries.

H1
Celebrity-led events (Robbins, Cardone) will dominate business conference rankings. Not confirmed. Tony Robbins events ranked #3 (4.8% visibility) and 10X Growth Conference #7 (2.5%) — well below Small Business Expo's 20.2%. Celebrity social followings do not translate to AI recommendations.
Not Confirmed
H2
Directory-heavy B2B trade shows will outperform thought-leader events in AI recommendations. Confirmed. Small Business Expo leads at 20.2% visibility — appearing in one of every five AI responses. Events with strong SEO infrastructure outperform personality-driven brands by 4–8x in visibility.
Confirmed
H3
At least one event will rank in both business and marketing top 5 — showing cross-category AI relevance. Confirmed. SXSW ranks #2 in business queries (15.2% visibility) and #2 in marketing queries (26.6% visibility). No other event appears in the top 5 of both categories.
Confirmed (SXSW)
H4
Corporate-hosted conferences (Dreamforce, INBOUND) will appear alongside independent events in AI answers. Confirmed. INBOUND (#4, 3.4% visibility) and Dreamforce (#12, 2.2%) both appear in the top 15 alongside independent conferences. Corporate events with strong content gravity compete organically.

Methodology

How we ran the study

1,465 AI queries across 4 major engines, executed Feb 3 – Feb 11, 2026 on the AIVO Research Engine.

Research Design

  • 1,465 unbranded business-intent prompts — no brand names, event names, or leading language in any query
  • 93 unique prompts spanning discovery, growth strategy, audience-specific, ROI, and competitive comparison topics
  • All prompts web-grounded with real-time search enabled for factual grounding
  • 32 branded-prompt leaks detected and removed during quality audit (2.1% of raw dataset)

Query Coverage

  • 5 query types: recommendation (30), comparison (23), problem/solution (18), informational (13), review (9)
  • 8 audience segments: general discovery, systems/growth, agency owners, executives, SMB owners, startups, ROI/justification, competitive
  • Every AI response parsed for event mentions — events normalized to canonical names with entity consolidation across name variants

AI Engines Tested

  • OpenAI (370 records), Google Gemini (371 records), Perplexity (365 records), Google AI Overview (359 records)
  • All tested with web search enabled for real-time grounding
  • Each prompt run independently on each engine — no cross-engine contamination

Data Quality & Metrics

  • Study period: Feb 3 – Feb 11, 2026 on AIVO Research Engine
  • Branded prompt leakage audit: 32 records containing event-specific brand terms were identified and excluded
  • Visibility % = percentage of AI responses (unique queries) in which the event was mentioned
  • Entity consolidation applied: name variants (e.g. 'INBOUND', 'INBOUND (HubSpot)', 'INBOUND 2026') merged to canonical names
