THE AIVO METHOD Confidence Intervals

The Range Is What Makes the Number Trustworthy

A confidence interval is not a margin of error on a guess. It is the range within which the true value sits, given the evidence collected. At 95% confidence, if you repeated the measurement many times, 95% of those ranges would contain the true value.

The range is on the inference, not the event

Run 100 prompts. The brand appears in 50. The appearance rate for those 100 runs is 50%. That 50% is a fact. There is no range on it. The range lives on the inference: what is the platform's underlying tendency to surface the brand? The 50 out of 100 is your best estimate, but a different 100 runs would have given 47, or 53.

POINT ESTIMATE VS INFERENCE

Observed rate (fact for those 100 runs)

50 of 100 = 50%

Underlying tendency (95% confidence)

50% (roughly 40% to 60%)

Why this matters more for AI than for a poll

The platform is genuinely stochastic

In a poll, each voter has a fixed opinion. On an AI platform, the “voter” is a fresh draw each time, because the model samples its own output. Stronger reason for a range, not weaker.

The width tells you how much to trust the number

At 50 of 100, the range is roughly 40% to 60%. At 5 of 10, same 50%, the range is roughly 24% to 76%. Identical point estimate, completely different trust.

Four terms that get confused

Confidence level (95%)

A choice about how conservative the interval is. Chosen, not earned by sample size.

Confidence interval

The range around the estimate. More runs make it narrower at the same confidence level.

Standard deviation

The spread of individual data points. Does not shrink with more data.

Statistical significance

Whether a difference between two things is larger than chance would produce. Applies only to comparisons, not estimates.

AIVO uses the term “confidence” when estimating a rate and “significance” only when comparing two rates. Using significance language for an estimation number is a category error. The correct question is “how wide is the range,” not “is this significant.”
